An independent temple of the Rinzai sect founded in the latter half of the 11th century, Hokyo-in contains the graves of military foes Ashikaga Yoshiakira (1330-1367 – 2nd shogun of the Muromachi period) and Kusunoki Masatsura (1326-1348).
Hokyo-in is situated in the area once known as Saga Moor. In The Tale of Genji, Genji’s own temple is described as being south of Daikaku-ji on Saga Moor.
