Counted as one of the three temples in Yamato formerly lived in by nobles, this is an elegant nunnery temple. It was built at the request of Empress Komyo, the wife of Emperor Shomu, in the 8th century and was built as a principle nunnery temple run by the state.
It once fell into a state of disrepair, but in 1601, the main hall, south gate and bell tower (all Important Cultural Properties) were reconstructed.
It is said that the Eleven Faced Kannon (National Treasure) is modeled on Empress Komyo.
The temple gardens are noted for their beauty.
The ‘watching dog’ that is considered to grant safe childbirth and protect against evil was made by the temple nuns.
